The Compliant Mechanism twists our understandings of the conventional structural behavior. By inverting the orientation of the deflection when loaded up, which once indicates the effect of gravity, the design is to deliver the counterintuitive message that the gravity is pointing to the opposite direction. The optimal layout of the structure is achieved through topology optimization. As the deflection becomes part of the design, it is important to maintain its initial shape and gesture. Therefore blue steel is determined to be used as it can return to its original shape despite significant deflection or twisting.
