Residence & ADU

South Pasadena, California

Nestled on a challenging 66% grade slope, this project confronts the City’s unique mountain regulations with innovative design and construction strategies.

By creatively navigating the challenges of a steep-slope site, the home harmonizes with its surroundings while offering both indoor and outdoor living spaces designed to inspire relaxation and connection.

Design Highlights:

  1. Built into the Slope: The home is ingeniously designed to integrate with the natural landscape, minimizing earthmoving and circumventing potential delays associated with haul route permits. This strategy not only enhances sustainability but also significantly reduces construction costs.

  2. Attached ADU: The inclusion of a connected Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) optimizes the home's footprint while expanding living space. A distinctive staircase seamlessly links the various levels, enhancing connectivity and flow within the residence.

  3. Terraced Massing: Our design features stepped terraces that create visually striking layers in the structure. The roof is transformed into a functional outdoor platform, providing residents with ample recreational space to enjoy the surrounding views.

  4. Double-Height Living Room: The living room showcases a striking double-height design, complemented by skylights that flood the space with natural light. This clever use of vertical space not only elevates the aesthetic appeal but also maximizes comfort and openness.
